Just saw a Maggi advertisement on TV with a new extension which shows a 'romantic' version of Maggi, aimed supposedly at people who have experienced or fantasize about growing old together. That would include perhaps 20% of all the romantics in india. It was aired on HBO which means its reaching out to the urban middle class, people between 25-34.

Google vs FaceBook

Perhaps the biggest difference between FaceBook and Google's social media strategy has been that while Google created several standalone products that could be extended and FaceBook is just one idea that keeps expanding. Being an ardent googler it makes me sad to see that Google couldn't focus on their core and started running around in circles, a bit like MS did when Google was growing up.

The surprise winner in the contest here though is MS, without having to fight Google they are reaping the benefits of being their enemy. What's surprising to me is Google resilience in developing newer social media products that are far away from their core motto of organizing the worlds information, despite having not a single product that has been a great success.

Google should perhaps buy a media company, leveraging Youtube which is the worlds most watched 'channel' to be able to organize content and create delivery mechanisms that make content as relevant as search. Facebook doesn't look like its going to stop anytime soon, especially after launching their new messaging service but the same sentiments were doing the rounds a few years back when Gmail was launched.
